This class has definitely opened my eyes regarding my surroundings. I have learned about the bias in our media and how to avoid it and not be sucked in by it. I've learned what is needed to make an ad eye catching and unique. My social skills and how to lure people in has also improved. Learning how to be creative and creating my own advertisements has made me think of a potential career in advertising. This was a very informative class and am very glad for taking it.

Week 15
Toblerone Advertisement
The three different media outlets we chose was instagram, vine, and facebook.
On instagram the audience was told to capture a picture that showed their holiday moment with the chocolate. They could be sharing the chocolate, cooking with it, or whatever the audience likes. Then they have to upload the picture and use the hashtag #mytobleronemoment.
On vine, the audience has to create a video that showed their holiday moment with the chocolate and share it using the same hashtag.
On facebook we would have the audience like our page and upload a picture and similarly as instagram show their holiday moment
Week 14
As long as I can remember I have been seeing advertisements on TV, but seeing it on the internet is fairly new. At first viewers could watch their videos on youtube with out ads. Now before videos you have to watch about 15 seconds of an ad before you can skip it.
Interruptive advertisement is used because the consumer ha no way of avoiding it unless they stop watching or listening to what they were doing.
The place I hate interruptive advertisements the most has to be on Pandora. There is no way you can skip it and have to listen to the entire ad.
Week 13
The Bug Vacuum
The way my group came up with an advertisement for the radio and television were quiet similar. The commercial starts with what sound like a women's scream coming from the bathroom. Then we see a women whose probably in her 30's run to the bathroom to find her husband screaming at a bug in the tub. He tells his wife he cant shower and cant get ready to go to her mothers party because there is a giant bug in the tub. The wife grabs the bug vacuum and uses it to get rid of the bug. After she tells her husband to get ready and stop complaining.
Week 12
In todays society for an to be remembered and noticed, it has to be innovative and out of the ordinary.
This advertisement is for hair products. By being so out of the ordinary and unique, it will catch the audiences eye and make them remember the product.
This advertisement is definitely something the audience will remember because it will make the audience laugh and remember their childhood show Tom & Jerry.
Not only does this ad has a weird way of sexual appeal to it, it also makes the audience giggle and remember the product.
With so many advertisement and products around, advertisers have to be unique and innovative to make their targeted audience remember their product.
Week 11
The Typewriter
In order to create an ad for a typewriter geared towards college students can be tough. The three media outlets chosen was the radio, the television, and Times magazine.
The radio ad would remind the audience of the simpler time where we didn't have to deal with a computer freezing or deleting your work by accident. We'd inform the audience of the simplicity the typewriter could bring a college student.
The television ad would be on Turners Classic Movies. This channel plays old movies and has a nostalgic feel to it. The audience would want to have a part of the past. Even if its a simple typewriter.
The Time magazine ad would be simple picture of a typewriter and have a slogan that says: "Remember Simplicity?"
By creating a nostalgic feel to help the audience of the modern world connect with a typewriter is the way to sell the product.

Week 10
Nostalgia Marketing
The advantages of nostalgia marketing is allowing the consumer to relive a part of their life that they cherish and when they felt happy or excited. By taking the consumer down memory lane will remind the consumer of their great experience with the product and encourage them to try it again. They will feel assured in quality of the product they are purchasing.
The disadvantages of nostalgia marketing is that the new generation has had no past with the product or not everyone that did have a past with it had a fond memory of it. Another negative side of it is that not all products are old enough to cause nostalgic feelings among consumers.
A time where nostalgic advertising would not be so successful is for companies dealing with technology. Its always important to move forward and become better than how the products where before. Never as good as before. Technological companies like Apple will always have to move forward and invent new ways to approach their consumers.
Week 9: Part 2
Jeep Advertising for Older Consumers
The 2013 Jeep Patriot was the vehicle my group decided to focus on. We chose the patriot because of the following facts:
- Starts at $15,995.
- 30 HWY MPG / 408 miles on a full tank.
- Front and side airbags. Front-torso protection.
- Not a roughrider; More comfort due to back suspensions.
- GPS and compass for easy navigation.
- Durability
The commercial would start with an older couple driving by the beach on their vacation. We show the inside the vehicle and the male driver goes and starts using the GPS and navigation system. While showing that the narrator will talk about the price and the MPG of the Jeep. Then we will show the rest of the car which is the grandchildren in the back. The narrator will talk about the safety features and how it is a smooth ride. Then it will flash into the future and show the grandkids older and flash again and show them even older. In the third frame one of the grandchildren will be driving and the grandfather is in the passenger seat, with the grandmother in the back seat. This is to show the durability of the Patriot.
Week 9
1. By gathering people for the same brand interest will increase consumer involvement in the brand. Not only that but it will also introduce people of the same interests to each other.
2. The elements of the Posse Ride that enhance the meaning of the brand to consumers is the idea and freedom of riding with others and enjoying the open road. This gives consumers a positive outlook of Harley-Davidson.
3. I do not believe Harley-Davidson should get more involved in the rides because it is supposed to be an idea of consumers enjoying their ride and adventures on the open road. If the company were to get more involved, it would take away from that idea and have the consumers believe it is a way to advertise the company's products.
4. Harley-Davidson can get consumers involved in other ways like having gatherings in bars or barbecues. They should also hold gathering and bike rides in small communities to get more consumers involved.

Week 8
This is Francisco:
He is 21 years old and lives in New York city. He wakes up everyday to his iPhone alarm clock. He is a student at New York University and has a part time job as a waiter. He wakes up on a friday and enjoys a bowl of Lucky Charms cereal and drinks a cup of Starbucks coffee he brewed at home. He then grabs his JanSport backpack with his school material and attends his morning class.
When Francisco is done with class he returns home and changes into his work clothes and heads to the restaurant where he works. Its a bistro close to where he lives and attends college. During his break he meets up with his friends at a pizzeria and enjoys his lunch with them.
When Francisco is done with work he returns home, rests, and then gets ready for his night out with friends. He usually drinks with his friends and hangouts at different places and parties.
This Advertisement targets Francisco and people like him:

Week 7: Part 2
PETA is an organization that has been fighting for animal rights with more than three million supporters. To convince people to help put a stop to animal abuse, PETA has used the faces of celebrities rather than showing an actual animal in pain.
This PETA advertisement shows a women in chains and getting treated like an animal. This uses a celebrity to gain support for animals. This shows how you can use various faces and technique to advertise different materials and campaigns.

Week 7: Part 1
While growing up as a child I was never forced or ever felt like I had to play with certain toys. For example my parents never forced me to play with dolls. I was allowed to play with toys more popular among boys such as legos or video games. In our society certain toys are made targeting girls. The Rose Petal Cottage House is a play house for girls where they can take care of a child and play as a real mom. This shapes the children's idea that a women has to raise a family and take care of a child.
By having children's toys be advertised towards one sex leads to general ideas about life roles a male and female have to portray in their lives.

Week 6
Although gender stereotyping in advertising has lessened over the years, it is still very much alive in our current advertisements. On many occasions the man is shown over powering the women. Having control over her. While the man is considered nude, the female is considered naked. A female is shown without a shirt as sexual appeal. Yet a man is shown shirtless to show power and masculinity.
This Guess advertisement is a perfect example. The man is taller and is forcing himself upon the girl. This proves that gender stereotyping still exists to this day.

Week 5, Part 2
The Office is one of the shows that reflects both racial and gender diversity. The show has both racial and gender diversity. The show includes people different sexes and background origin.
While the show has all this diversity, it still has racism involved in it. This show uses stereotypes and racism in the name of humor. For example the gay character in the show receives a lot of mistreatment and gets mocked for his sexual preferences. Or the Indian character always faces different racist assumptions by her coworkers. Its important to have diversity in shows because it lets the show be appealing to all people.

Week 5, Part 1
Racially stereotyping in done in advertising to shock people into buying stuff. In one incident that I have seen this be done is a commercial by Kool-Aid.
Link: Racist Kool-Aid Ad
This commercial is racist towards the African American population. It stereotypes them as people who just play basketball and hangout in basketball courts. There is no other races seen in this commercial which leads to the stereotype that African Americans love Kool-Aid.
Based on their customer demographics, Kool-Aid discovered the majority of their customers are African American, therefore reaching out to them in their advertisement. This shows that racism in advertising is still happening now and not a thing of the past.
I believe advertisers have an ethical responsibility to not discriminate in their work. While something could even be a positive stereotype, it can still put pressure on that group. Advertisers should reach their customers without stereotyping against them.

Week Four
Semiotics.
This is all about the study of signs. Ferdinand de Saussure, Charles Sanders Pierce, and Roland Barthes all helped shape and form semiotics and later relate it to advertising.
Semiotics helps us learn the difference between whats a symbol and what is symbolic. For example a flag. What is an icon and what is iconic. Like what picture is chosen the be the icon of and iPhone app. What is index or indexical like footprints.
We learn that signs are polysemic and hold different meanings depending on the context, culture, and the individual.

Week Three
Brands do not really mean much when it comes to clothing because I believe it is up to the person to make a brand work for them.
Brands that are important to me are products that need to have a good quality. For example cars or other technological things. Obviously I would rather have an iPhone instead of a Nokia.
Getting a good name out there for your brand is important. People will choose a Mercedes over a Ford even if they have never had either one because based on our society a Mercedes in a better car.

Week Two
The guest speaker, Dietmar Dahmen, was one of the best speakers I ever had for a class. He kept his audience engaged and interested. He mentioned when we buy something, we buy that object with the hopes it comes with. For example we buy a dress because with the hopes of wearing it and looking great. He compared advertising to giving people hope. I thought that was one of his really interesting theories. Another thing he mentioned was the fact we invent technology, and then we take that technology to reinvent ourselves. In our society people are so used and accustomed to their phones that its hard for us to take vacations with out the use of our phones. Seeing Dahmen has encouraged me maybe pursue a career in advertising.

Week One
What excites me about advertising is the fact that you have to convince people of a product, or an idea, or anything at all. I think the idea of "sex sells" is great. I, a female, think it has nothing to do with inequality and if that is an effective form of advertisement then we should use it. I love talking to people and am a very social person in general. It excites me I can have a career that allows me to socialize with others and try to experiment new things.
